journeyed across the Gulf

from his mother

learned the secrets

of the healing herbs

received the gift

of healing from ancestors

Sundays

dedicated

devoted

to the service

of God

and man

he prays

and fasts

and preaches

all day

ministers

to the need

of the distressed

and diseased

fearlessly faces powers

and principalities

tells the tale of how he almost died

was born again to live another life

tear down the man of flesh

and from a new foundation

build upon the rock

the afflicted

from far and wide they come

wracked and wrapped in pain

desperately seeking remedies

relief from their condition

sometimes he speaks a language

only he can understand

while herb and healing honey flows

from head and heart and hand

and now in the crepuscule

of the capsule

of a life

intimate with Earth

and Heaven

sowing growing

reaping rearing

building

the faithful shepherd

must find an able

helper worthy

to pass it on
